چکیده

In numerical computations the question how much does a function change under perturbations of its arguments is of central importance. In this work, we investigate sensitivity of Gauss-Christoffel quadrature with respect to small perturbations of the distribution function. In numerical quadrature, a definite integral is approximated by a finite sum of functional values evaluated at given quadrature nodes and multiplied by given weights. Consider a sufficiently smooth integrated function uncorrelated with the perturbation of the distribution function. Then it seems natural that given the same number of function evaluations, the difference between the quadrature approximations is of the same order as the difference between the (original and perturbed) approximated integrals. That is perhaps one of the reasons why, to our knowledge, the sensitivity question has not been formulated and addressed in the literature, though several other sensitivity problems, motivated, in particular, by computation of the quadrature nodes and weights The work of the first author was supported by the National Science Foundation under Grants CCR-0204084 and CCF-0514213. We survey existing particular results and show that even a small perturbation of a distribution function can cause large differences in Gauss-Christoffel quadrature estimates. We then discuss conditions under which the Gauss-Christoffel quadrature is insensitive under perturbation of the distribution function, present illustrative examples, and relate our observations to known conjectures on some sensitivity problems.

Construction of Gauss-Christ of fei Quadrature Formulas

Each of these rules will be called a Gauss-Christoffel quadrature formula if it has maximum degree of exactness, i.e. if (1.1) is an exact equality whenever / is a polynomial of degree 2n — 1. It is a well-known fact, due to Christoffel [3], that such quadrature formulas exist uniquely, provided the weight function w(x) is nonnegative, integrable with /* w(x)dx > 0, and such that all its moments

Multiple-Instance Learning: Christoffel Function Approach to Distribution Regression Problem

A two–step Christoffel function based solution is proposed to distribution regression problem. On the first step, to model distribution of observations inside a bag, build Christoffel function for each bag of observations. Then, on the second step, build outcome variable Christoffel function, but use the bag’s Christoffel function value at given point as the weight for the bag’s outcome. The ap...

Analysis of Krylov subspace methods: Moments, error estimators, numerical stability and unexpected consequences

Krylov subspace methods play an important role in many areas of scientific computing, including numerical solution of linear algebraic systems arising from discretization of partial differential and/or integral equations. By their nature they represent model reductions based on matching moments. Such view naturally complements, to our opinion, the standard description using the projection proce...
